The La Plata Planning Commission on May 21 approved a major site plan for a parking expansion and circulation improvements at the University of Maryland Charles Regional Medical Center. The hospital’s site is about 2.988 acres for the area under review; the larger campus context was discussed.
Janine Harrington told commissioners the applicant demolished a former office building to make space for additional parking and circulation, including an interparcel connection from Oak Avenue to the emergency-room entrance to improve flow for emergency vehicles. She said step-3 stormwater plans were submitted and approved and that the proposal meets town standards for lighting and parking-lot landscaping (chapter 191-48).
Commissioners asked whether the expansion would increase traffic or impede emergency access; Harrington said the work is intended to increase circulation opportunities and aid emergency-vehicle flow. The commission voted unanimously to approve the major site plan.
The approval permits the hospital to proceed to construction permitting consistent with the approved plans and town code requirements.
