District showcases four new school sites, announces ribbon‑cuttings

Superintendent Alvarez and capital projects staff highlighted: Frederick Douglass Collegiate Academy (expanded college and career pathways and a therapeutic program), the Fenwick Street Early Childhood Center (ECC) for early childhood education, CASA (City Arts and Science Academy) offering alternate and flexible pathways, and the Virginia Barton Education Center at Briarcliff (serving students requiring a safe, therapeutic environment).
The district said the projects required substantial capital and operational work and thanked the ISD and capital projects teams, principals and community partners. Videos and speakers showed classroom spaces, a makerspace, a dance/movement studio and a new kitchen at Frederick Douglass. Officials said CASA will open a makerspace and planned features include a laser cutter, 3‑D printers and hand tools as the program grows.
Leanne Palmer, TEAMS program director, described the Virginia Barton Education Center as the new home for the TEAMS program that serves students ages 3–22 and said the site includes specialized supports (speech therapists, board‑certified behavior analysts, physical and occupational therapy, vision services and more).
District leaders announced a ribbon cutting for one building on Oct. 1 and a November ribbon cutting for the Virginia Barton Center at Briarcliff; the district invited the public to attend.
Committee members praised facilities and staff, and district leaders credited capital projects and finance teams and the city council for enabling investments.
