Chief John Majoy of the Newburgh Heights Police Department thanked Cuyahoga County Council for allocating ARPA funds used to host the Northeast Ohio Amber Alert Conference on Oct. 23 and reported the event drew 375 criminal-justice practitioners.
Majoy, who also identified himself as chairman of the Northeast Ohio Ambulance Committee and president of the board for Cleveland Missing, said ARPA funds covered speaker costs and subsidized agency attendance so the conference was free for participants. “It was nothing short of amazing,” Majoy said, noting the keynote speaker was Elizabeth Smart and that attendees were “so fixated on a dynamic speaker” that the conference elevated thinking on missing-persons response.
Majoy told the council that the conference included regional participation and that CCOMS and county staff were supportive. He singled out council members Derek Kelly and Council President Jones and staff members Lisa Rafferty and Jackie Costa for help in getting the event funded and organized.
Context: Majoy’s remarks were made during the public-comment portion of the meeting and were presented as a report-back on a grant-funded training event; no council action was required.
