SWMHS Air Force JROTC reports enrollment surge, plans for flight training

Canan said JROTC is a four‑year high‑school elective and clarified that it does not obligate cadets to military service. "JROTC is actually a high school elective. It's 5 credits at our high school... and it's really just to improve your character and the leader you become," he said.
Canan reported the corps had 33 returning cadets and 52 new cadets — a roughly 60% increase from the prior year — and said the program currently offers more than 40 cadet leadership jobs. He described regular activities including physical training, drill, color guard and leadership roles; he also listed field trips and events such as visits to McGuire Air Force Base, Fleet Week, PT Raiders and a military ball.
On future programming, Canan said the unit plans a flight‑training event that will give three cadets a roughly 40‑minute flight with a certified instructor, and listed a unit inspection and a change-of-command ceremony toward the end of the semester as upcoming items. He said flight training is arranged with the unit’s leader, Colonel Tomasi.
Board members and administrators applauded the presentation and thanked cadets for their work; the board also invited cadets and leadership to return with follow-up reports on cadet outcomes and program logistics. The district did not provide details on funding sources for planned flight training or the specific dates for the inspection beyond approximate timing described in the presentation.
