A department presenter said the county’s 10‑year contract previously included a five‑year equipment refresh and that the county recently completed widespread equipment replacement and training that concluded in November 2023. The department said the state has delayed its statewide certification and pilot schedule; the state will start pilot communities next year and, after certification, provide five years for full statewide migration. Extending the Motorola contract, the presenter said, lets the county better coordinate timing and protect recent equipment refresh investments.
Council members asked whether the county needed the extension immediately; presenters said the current contract runs to March and the extension was requested so staff would be prepared once the state timeline is clearer. The committee voted to send the amendment to full council for second reading.
