Pasco County parks and transportation staff presented Aug. 21 a draft trail wayfinding plan that would standardize directional signage, mile markers and maps across the county’s major spine trails, including Suncoast Trail, Orange Belt Trail and the Coast‑to‑Coast corridors.
Jae Yan, lead senior planner for Pasco County Parks, and Erin Swanson, project manager with the county transportation engineering department, said the plan’s goals are clarity, modularity and ease of updating. Staff proposed a Lake‑County–style modular directional sign with a thin, trail‑specific color band to allow quick visual distinction between major trails, mile markers placed every half‑mile and seven‑by‑four‑foot trailhead maps at trailheads.
Board members and advisory committees asked that designs be more visually distinctive and “festive,” suggested including QR codes on signs that link to maps, history and nearby businesses, and recommended incorporating local connecting trails and amenities on trailhead maps. Staff noted the county does not yet have a dedicated trail‑content web layer for QR codes and will explore linking QR codes to the county’s public Pasco Mapper or other content.
The plan is intended as a living document: county staff said they will continue to refine graphic design, determine where QR codes should link, and coordinate with FDOT and neighboring counties to make wayfinding more consistent across the Coast‑to‑Coast Trail Alliance. No formal action was required at the meeting; staff sought feedback from the board and advisory committees.
