Summer Sunshine day-camp served 247 children and raised $4,205 for scholarships

The Summer Sunshine day-camp in Farmers Branch registered 247 children this year, filled 75 tier-1 financial aid slots and raised $4,205.28 for the youth scholarship fund through concessions and carnival activities, Parks and Recreation staff reported.
City recreation staff told the Parks and Recreation Board that the Summer Sunshine day-camp, for children ages 6–12, registered 247 participants this summer against a planned capacity of 275 and averaged 145 daily attendees.
Staff said 118 campers were city residents, 90 used the department’s resident financial-aid program (75 at tier 1, $60 per week, and the remainder at tier 2, $100 per week), and 39 were nonresidents. Resident registration opened March 1; nonresident registration began April 1. Standard weekly fees were $130 for residents and $160 for nonresidents.
The program operated May 23–Aug. 11 (excluding Memorial Day and Independence Day). Staff reported 22 seasonal staff members, orientation on May 18 and a mid-summer in-service on June 29. The camp offered weekly field trips, used the nearby elementary-school breakfast and lunch program for much of the summer, and held a final community carnival that drew more than 200 participants and raised $4,205.28 for the youth scholarship fund through concessions and camp trading-post sales.
Staff said there were no outstanding participant fees at the program’s end. The board thanked staff for the tiered financial-aid approach, which members said increased access for families who otherwise could not afford the program.
