Sunnyside seeks $5.57 million for wastewater and lift station upgrades in Public Works Board application

Sunnyside staff told the City Council July 28 they will seek $5,571,000 from the Washington State Public Works Board to fund construction and construction management for upgrades to the wastewater treatment plant and replacement of two lift stations, including the Exit 67 lift station.

Deputy Public Works Director Hector Mejia said the headworks process at the treatment plant has failed and is limiting the plant’s ability to process waste, making the repair a high priority. He said hydrogen sulfide corrosion had deteriorated the Exit 67 lift station, which serves homes and businesses in the city’s southern area.

Mejia described a likely loan term of 20 years at an estimated rate of 1.06 percent and said the city could be eligible for up to $2 million in grant funds, though the grant/loan mix will be determined when awards are announced. Staff said funding award notifications are anticipated in November 2025 and that if the loan terms are unfavorable, the city can decline the award before final execution.

Councilors asked about which neighborhoods the Exit 67 lift station serves; staff replied it covers the area from First Street out to Midvale and Alexander and includes the portion near Exit 67. Staff said the project timeline and the funding award will determine the next budget steps; the requested amount was $5,571,000 in construction and management services.

Council authorized staff to sign an applicant certification and direct HLA (consultant) to submit the application when complete.
