The Sunnyside City Council on July 28 approved an ordinance repealing chapter 5.02 of the Sunnyside Municipal Code and removing the city’s Crime Free Rental Housing program from the municipal code.
City staff said the ordinance was adopted by the city around 2012–2013 and that the city has not used the program since 2019. “This ordinance repeals that ordinance, so that it is no longer on the books,” the interim city manager said during the meeting.
Councilors moved and seconded the repeal; there was no debate recorded and the council voted unanimously to adopt the repeal. The action removes the statutory chapter from local code but does not, at the meeting, create a replacement policy or new enforcement program.
The council did not discuss specific implications for landlords, tenants, or enforcement protocols during the meeting; council members asked no follow-up questions about implementation.
Any regulatory or enforcement steps that would replace the chapter would require separate council action and were not proposed on July 28.
