Subcommittee requests briefings on climate preparedness education and warns of appraisal‑district election risk

Members of the AISD‑city‑county joint subcommittee used the meeting’s final agenda item to propose future briefings on two topics: climate‑related education and preparedness, and the potential fiscal risks tied to the upcoming appraisal‑district election.

Commissioner Bridget Shea asked whether the subcommittee could receive a briefing on “education related to impacts of climate change and preparedness happening among any of our three entities,” saying she wanted to know whether schools can be used to spread disaster‑preparedness skills for families. Members discussed coordinating preparedness education across the district, city and county and returning with information at a future meeting.

A subcommittee member also raised concerns about the May 4 election for the local appraisal district and potential downstream consequences for school funding. The member warned that if appraisal determinations fall outside auditor thresholds, school districts could face repayment liabilities and “that people need to understand that there's a potential very serious financial threat to public schools” if the election leads to changes that affect appraisal processes. The subcommittee asked staff to consider scheduling briefings on these topics in future meetings and to provide any available timelines for the new city manager introduction.
