Superintendent Allison told the School Committee the district will undertake three significant summer facilities projects: ADA compliance work at Hastings, removal and replacement of the original 1956 gym floor at Gibbons, and paving and drainage repairs at Armstrong and Gibbons.
Allison said the Hastings work began last summer and will continue this summer; the scope includes exterior work, doors, bathroom upgrades and cabinets to meet Americans with Disabilities Act compliance triggered by a roof project. Staff access and some parking will remain during construction, and the superintendent said the project remains on track for completion on schedule despite some delays.
The Gibbons gym floor will be removed and replaced because sanding and refinishing are no longer feasible; Allison said the work requires removing bleachers and dividers and addressing subfloor issues and is expected to start and finish during the summer. She warned it is a larger project than it appears because of the required ancillary work.
Allison said patching and paving work at Armstrong and Gibbons will focus on safety and drainage, addressing icy patches and improving traffic flow; she said remaining ARPA funds are helping pay for that work. Because of noise and machinery, some summer programs that previously used the buildings were relocated off-site or to the community center for the season.
Allison also introduced a college intern who will document projects with photography and help produce updates and a possible presentation or website for the district.
No vote or formal action was required or taken on these project updates during the meeting.
