Resident urges enforcement as Third Street sidewalk remains closed; staff cites fence supply delay

Summary
A resident urged the Board of Public Works to compel the redevelopment commission to fix a closed sidewalk on the north side of West Third Street near the future convention hotel; Public Works staff said the closure remains for safety because the required aluminum fencing is on back order.
A resident told the Board of Public Works on July 1 that a sidewalk on the north side of West Third Street, west of College Avenue near the future convention hotel, has been closed and that the redevelopment commission has not resolved the obstruction.
Greg Alexander urged the board to enforce city sidewalk requirements and to make the redevelopment commission correct the closure. "This responsibility isn't to you guys. It's not to their bosses. It's not to the mayor. It's not to the city council. It's to us, the citizens, to provide a safe and efficient pedestrian network throughout the city," Alexander said during the public-comment portion.
Adam Wason, public works director, responded that staff is "doing everything we can possibly do to try to get that sidewalk open" but that the issue is a supply shortage: the black aluminum fencing required for the southern portion of the sidewalk where Third Street goes under is on back order and has not been delivered. He said the closure must remain for safety and that staff is posting laminated signs explaining the delay and following up weekly with the contractor.
Alexander asked the board to require enforcement (fines or remediation) against the redevelopment commission; the public-record discussion did not show the board issuing a directive or taking formal action on enforcement during the meeting. Wason said staff will provide another update next week.
