On a senior resource center caregiver support item (26‑007), staff described the program as family caregiver support that can include in‑home respite care, support groups, education and supplies such as incontinence materials or nutritional supplements. A commissioner said the topic will grow in public importance and thanked staff for advancing the program.
For several sheriff's office items (26‑008 and 26‑009), a sheriff's department representative identified recent purchases from forfeiture or seized funds such as a canine and supplies and said training and travel funds cover items including attendance at legislative update meetings for leadership. The board asked for more specific descriptions in packet language so the public understands the purpose of each line item.
On capital rollovers (26‑012), staff said $6.7 million of the roughly $8.9 million rollover is for New Hanover County Schools, including final bills for New Hanover High School structural repairs and other school projects. Examples cited included $386,000 for a water park sewer lift station, $529,000 for Title IX improvements at New Hanover High School and Hauger, and $393,000 for technology switchgear at a Carolina Beach location. Commissioners noted that school funding is substantially supported by county dollars and asked staff to reflect that in communications.
Commissioners also discussed Legion Stadium funding and facility maintenance projects. Staff said the new Legion Stadium turf project came in nearly $200,000 under budget and those savings are being redirected to other facility upgrades. Board members asked about Holly Tree Elementary envelope repairs and whether work includes siding, windows and roofing; staff said scope includes siding, window and door work and referenced recent HVAC and dehumidification work that has helped but noted further envelope repairs remain necessary.
On a flooring replacement at Carolina Beach Elementary, a commissioner asked about asbestos; staff said no asbestos abatement was underway and that the project has not yet started. Throughout the consent discussion commissioners asked staff to provide additional project details where budgets are sizable so the public can better understand scope and timing.
