Madison Local Schools staff told the board that kindergarten registration is up and that the district is coordinating transition planning for incoming students, including those with disabilities.
As of Tuesday of the week of the meeting, a district staff member reported 103 students had completed kindergarten registration with paperwork, and noted the district had 168 kindergartners "this year." The staff member said the district watches registration through the summer and that about 175 students would be the threshold to add another teacher: "It's about a 175 when I would have to add a teacher." Board members and staff described changes to registration events: this year the district held kindergarten nights at school buildings where families toured classrooms, rode a bus on site and walked cafeteria lines to familiarize students with school routines.
Staff described a separate transition process for students with disabilities and said teams including Jovette, Shannon, Teresa and others are planning meetings to group students and set up supports before the school year. A board member said administrators Angela and the staff member have a meeting scheduled to review projected numbers and service needs.
Why it matters: early registration numbers and transition work affect staffing, classroom assignments and special-education planning. The board did not take formal action; staff will continue to monitor registrations and make staffing recommendations in August as needed.
