School committee adopts five-year roadmap, vows annual July progress check

The Barnstable School Committee unanimously adopted a five-year roadmap to guide district priorities and directed staff to provide a progress update each July.

Committee members debated wording in the roadmap’s opening section on district strengths and amended the draft to read: “We are the largest and most diverse school system on Cape Cod with the greatest course offerings and opportunities for students.” A motion to replace the paragraph passed unanimously.

The roadmap frames multi-year priorities including facilities planning, curriculum review cycles, staff recruitment and retention, career pathways and community partnerships. Committee vice chair Jen (first name only) — who led the summer planning sessions — said the process produced “frank and well thought out” conversations and that the document should help make the committee more proactive than reactive.

Committee members asked that the document not sit unused once adopted. After discussion they approved a separate motion requiring the superintendent and chair to provide an update on roadmap implementation at the committee’s July meeting each year. “One of the things I really wanted with this document … is continuity through changes in school committee membership,” Jen said.

Members said the roadmap will inform district improvement planning and budget oversight but does not itself change operational responsibilities. The committee voted unanimously to accept the roadmap as amended and to request the annual July report.
