The Urbana Committee of the Whole voted to send an ordinance amending city code chapter 12 to change the Human Relations Commission’s name to the Human Rights Commission to the council consent agenda.
Pete Resnick, a long-serving commission member, and staff explained the change would modernize language, reduce public confusion and align the commission name with similar bodies in other municipalities. Staff said residents sometimes contact city offices for “human relations” issues that are distinct from human resources or other services, and the proposed name would align the commission with the city’s human-rights work and make the commission’s purpose clearer to the public.
Council members supported the change and noted other wording edits that replace citizen-specific language with gender-neutral phrasing. The sponsor said the amendments are primarily housekeeping and modernization rather than policy changes.
Council members moved the ordinance to the consent agenda; the motion to send the item to council passed without objection. The ordinance will appear on the next city council agenda for final approval on the consent calendar.
