The Cache County Council voted Thursday to amend the apportionment of an existing 0.3% sales and use tax, changing the distribution from 75% public safety and 25% transportation to 60% public safety and 40% transportation effective Jan. 1.
Finance staff said the reallocation would balance the distributions for 2026 because the county had already allocated three quarters of the year under the previous proportions. Andrew (finance staff) told the council the change must be adopted before the statutory September deadline to allow the state tax commission to accept the apportionment change effective January 1.
Nut graf: By adopting the 60/40 split, the council aimed to provide relatively more revenue for transportation in 2026 while retaining a majority share for public safety; council members discussed implementation timing and confirmed that transportation funds will be held in a separate fund for future allocation.
A council member moved to suspend the rules and adopt the resolution to change the apportionment percentages; the council approved the resolution. Staff said the transfer will be effective Jan. 1 and noted that the budget previously passed reflected the earlier apportionment for three quarters of 2025.
Ending: The county will record the apportionment change with the tax commission and set up a separate transportation fund to receive the new proportion of the sales tax receipts for 2026.
