Resident raises steep irrigation-rate increase; commissioners refer questions to CFPUA board

A Wilmington-area resident told the New Hanover County Board of Commissioners that his water bill rose from about $140 a month to $285 and questioned a 59% year-over-year increase in the utility's irrigation rate.
Tom Plaskett, who spoke during the meeting's public-comment period, said he had two meters at his home and that the irrigation-rate allocation appeared to shift costs in ways he described as problematic; he said the irrigation-rate increase was a catalyst for his review of the Cape Fear Public Utility Authority (CFPUA) budget.
Chair William E. Rivenbark advised Plaskett that the CFPUA board meeting is the appropriate forum for those concerns and told him the CFPUA meeting would be held Oct. 8 at 9 a.m. at the Government Center. Rivenbark also said he had received Plaskett's materials and offered to speak with him after the commissioners' meeting. Commissioner Zappel said she would speak with Plaskett after the meeting as well.
No county-level action was taken; the chair directed the resident to the CFPUA board meeting for a forum where CFPUA officials can address budget and rate-setting questions.
