Mayor Crest Staley read a mayoral proclamation during the Aug. 27, 2025, council meeting designating Washington City as an "America 250" community, a designation the city said is intended to support grant eligibility and community events tied to the United States’ 250th anniversary.
The proclamation notes that the national semiquincentennial culminates on July 4, 2026, and calls on residents to mark the anniversary "through community events, art, words, deeds, prayer, meditation, education, and service." Mayor Staley told the council that Washington City has already placed a billboard on I‑15 and built a pocket park on George Washington Boulevard with a statue of George Washington; the city is also planning banners along Telegraph Street and Main Street and will pursue grant funding to support these and other community activities.
Staley read the proclamation into the record and encouraged residents to participate in events and recognitions during the next year. The council did not take a separate binding vote on the proclamation; the mayor’s proclamation was presented as part of the meeting’s announcements.
The mayor also reminded the public that City Hall will be closed for Labor Day on Sept. 1.
