The new student board members — Ryan Gleason, James Wyatt, Abigail (Abby) and Evelyn — were sworn in after the board approved a resolution to seat them. Superintendent Dr. McBride described the student-board program as an expanded way to include student voices on standing committees and said the students have already completed onboarding.
The board selected the student members from a competitive application pool. Dr. McBride told the board the program initially received 53 applicants in its first year and 26 applicants in the most recent cycle; the board interviewed a final set of 12 candidates in June. "They've already done their onboarding with me. James and Ryan will sit at this table once monthly in the formal meeting. Evelyn will work with the curriculum committee, and Abby here will work with the facility and finance committee," Dr. McBride said.
Board member Tammy Hayes moved to accept the four student board members; the motion was seconded by Candice Garrison and approved by roll call. The vote was recorded as a unanimous approval of the motion to seat the students.
Board members and administrators took photographs after the oath and publicly thanked the families and district staff who supported the students' onboarding and selection process. The students will participate in committee work and attend the district's monthly board meetings as part of their assigned committee roles.
The seating followed the board's protocol for student representation on committees: the students are assigned to specific committees so they gain experience in smaller meetings before participating in the full-board discussions.
The administration and board emphasized that the student representatives are nonvoting participants who provide perspective to the board and committees. The district will continue to run the student selection process annually and to provide onboarding and mentorship for the student members.
