A representative of the Albany City School District Special Education Parent Advisory Council (CPAC) told the board the group has grown and will present information this year to help increase understanding of students served by individualized education programs (IEPs).
Becky Zimmerman, speaking during the public-comment portion of the meeting, said CPAC began in 2021 and has grown to a mailing list of about 170 parents, guardians, staff and partners. She described CPAC's work providing parent support, running an annual awards program recognizing staff who help special education students, maintaining communication channels and coordinating with the Special Education Department.
Zimmerman said CPAC plans to present informational materials during the year about the roughly 11% of district students who have IEPs, including explanations of IEPs and the types of students who receive services, with the aim of expanding board members' knowledge and public understanding.
She also noted CPAC helps parents prepare for special education meetings and provides direct support and referrals to families.
The board thanked Zimmerman for the presentation and indicated staff will follow up on CPAC's plans for future informational sessions.
