At the Oct. 6, 2025 meeting of the City of La Porte Common Council, Ed Volk, president of the La Porte Municipal Airport Board, presented the airport's proposed budget for 2026 and asked the council to approve appropriations and tax rates for airport funds.
Volk said the airport's total adopted budget for 2026 is $1,212,738, composed of an airport general fund budget of $774,700, a debt service fund of $119,238 and a cumulative building fund of $318,800. The airport requested an adopted tax levy of $786,130 and presented adopted tax rates that the board estimated at 0.0676 for the general fund, 0.022 for debt service and 0.0229 for the cumulative building fund, for a combined rate the board listed as 0.1125; the board noted the Department of Local Government Finance (DLGF) typically adjusts final rates during certification.
Volk told the council the airport relies on a mix of local funds and FAA grants to fund improvements. "We rely a lot upon not only the community building fund, but we also rely upon funds coming from the FAA, various types of grants," he said. He also warned about potential state‑level changes: "I'm a little bit concerned as to what's gonna happen next year or so when that Senate Bill 1 comes fully into effect. It...doesn't take much to figure out it's not gonna be good for the airport," Volk said.
Council liaison Laura Kenejny and other council members praised the airport board's work and noted the long‑term goal of a 6,000‑foot runway as a potential transformative project for the facility. The public hearing was opened and then closed; the item will return to the Oct. 20 council meeting for continued action.
The airport board asked the council to approve the budget so the airport can continue routine operations and planned capital work; officials said the community building fund is a critical source for local airport improvements and that modest increases in the three funds reflect the board's priorities for 2026.
