Arvin students showcase teaching pathway offering dual credit and field experience to address teacher pipeline

Students at the Arvin Education Center showcased the school’s teaching and learning pathway during the Sept. 22 Oldham County Board of Education meeting, demonstrating how dual-credit classes and regular field placements expose learners to classroom practice and prepare them for teaching careers.
Matt Watkins, principal at Arvin Education Center, introduced the program and invited student presenters to explain learning goals and the pathway’s structure: “We are growing both in size and also in our knowledge of the teaching profession, human development, best practice instruction,” Watkins said. Student presenters described four dual-credit courses in the pathway that together can earn up to 12 college credit hours; the credits are covered by the Work Ready Scholarship, a state program referenced by students. Presenters also said pathway students take part in regular field experiences at district schools on Tuesdays and Thursdays and complete extended projects such as ethnographies and theory-based teaching portfolios.
