Board approves HVAC mini-split for Animal Care and Control; director urges volunteers and donations as shelter remains at capacity

The Board of Public Works approved a $3,082 contract July 15 with Heflin Industries to install a mini-split heating and cooling system in a treatment room at the Animal Care and Control facility.
Adam Wason, public works director, said the unit will better heat and cool a room where veterinary-type services are provided. The city received three quotes; Wason said Heflin Industries was the low bidder at $3,082 and staff recommended awarding the work to them. The motion to award passed on roll call; Roach and Caron recorded "aye."
In a staff report the director also said the animal shelter is operating at capacity and that intake levels have stretched staff resources. Wason urged community members who might adopt, foster, volunteer or donate to the facility to consider doing so, and noted the shelter is staffed around the clock. "We are currently at capacity... we are pretty stressed with our intake levels and, overall, the population we're serving at the shelter," Wason said. He asked community members to check the shelter's Facebook page or contact the shelter for information on volunteering, fostering and donating.
The HVAC work is intended to support on-site veterinary care areas; the board approved the contract and staff will coordinate installation and continued outreach for volunteer and foster support.
