Resident urges board to move school‑board election to April and restore longer public comment

A Sayreville resident told the Board of Education on Nov. 19 that the district’s November board elections have increased the perception of political influence in school races, and asked the board to consider returning elections to April and restoring five‑minute public comment periods.
“Having the board of education election in April often decreases the appearance of that election being partisan or political,” Anthony Susado, a Washington Road resident, told the board. He referenced a recent article about politicization of school‑board races and said moving elections back to April “would give the appropriate attention that an election as important as this would merit.”
Susado also asked the board to consider restoring the public‑comment time limit to five minutes per speaker, a change the resident said the board could make at its next meeting. He said he was not asking for a motion at that meeting but urged returning board members to focus on “the good of our children” and preserve the board’s nonpartisan work.
The board took no formal action on Susado’s recommendations at the Nov. 19 meeting; public comment closed after the remarks.
