Sayreville honors student athletes and Eagle Scout who raised funds for Wilson School playground

The Sayreville Board of Education used part of its Nov. 19 meeting to recognize fall athletes, student achievements and community volunteers, and to hear a presentation from an Eagle Scout who led a fundraising and build project for an elementary‑school playground.
Morgan Koontz, Sayreville War Memorial High School student council representative, summarized recent student activities including DECA participation, a theater production at the newly named Jon Bon Jovi Performing Arts Center, and fall sports accomplishments. Alana Ceremony, Sayreville Middle School student council representative, reported on Veterans Day activities, a county‑level food drive and middle‑school athletics results.
The board then heard a presentation from Elijah Jung, a Sayreville student who led an Eagle Scout project to fund and install a playground at the Wilson School. Dr. Labbe introduced the project by saying Elijah “single‑handedly … raised $12,000 for the purchase and installation of the brand new playground at the Wilson School.” Elijah described a multi‑year effort that began in his freshman year and included pasta dinners, car washes, GoFundMe and other fundraisers. In his slideshow he described the finished site and referred to “this $13,000 playground,” and showed photos of benches, a gaga pit and the installed jungle gym.
Board members and administrators praised the student’s leadership. “It is staggering for a young person to raise $12,000,” Dr. Labbe said, and several board members thanked Elijah and asked practical questions about the benches, which he explained can convert into picnic‑style tables.
The meeting also featured recognition of the high school’s White Division field hockey champions and the Greater Middlesex Conference game‑day cheer champions, with coaches and student lists introduced at the dais. Coaches and board members commended the students for their seasons and community support.
The recognitions and the Eagle Scout presentation were ceremonial and informational; no formal district policy or budget change was required to accept the presentation.
