Steve Watson, superintendent of Cartwright Elementary District, addressed listeners in Maryville to mark Hispanic Heritage Month and pointed to several national observances across the Spanish-speaking world.
"This month, we have the honor of celebrating Hispanic heritage," Watson said, adding that the recognition extends "not just here in Maryville, but throughout Arizona and our nation." He cited Mexican Independence Day, celebrated with "El Grito Mexicano" on Sept. 16, Chilean Independence Day on Sept. 18 and Equatorial Guinea's independence on Oct. 12.
Watson said the celebrations reflect "so many rich contributions from our Hispanic communities and friends, throughout the world," and added that "to understand our future better, we really need to understand our past and where we came from." The remarks were delivered as part of a school observance and did not include any proposed policy changes or formal board actions.
