Barnstable students honored for competitions, internships and summer programs; 99 students took Washington, D.C., field trip

The Barnstable School Committee on June 4 heard a series of recognitions and presentations highlighting student achievement and programs across the district, including a student slideshow about a Washington, D.C., field trip, announcement of Future Problem Solving finalists, Advanced Studies and Leadership Program (ASLP) invites, and multiple end‑of‑year celebrations.
Fifth‑through‑high‑school students gave a brief presentation about a multi‑day Washington, D.C., field trip. The district said 117 travelers participated this year, including 99 students (up from 68 last year), five parents, 12 chaperones and a nurse. Students and chaperones described visits to monuments, the Capitol, the National Archives, the National Zoo, the African American History Museum and Arlington National Cemetery. One student said the National Zoo and the pandas were a highlight; another described the Holocaust Museum and Veterans memorials as meaningful.
In separate recognitions, Director of Teaching and Learning Carrie Andrade announced that 11 Barnstable students — Matthew Brancaccio, Kathleen Ramos, Peter Andraj, Ali Bernardo, Ashley Cox, Madison McLaughlin, Leah Reis, Evan Pananan, Shelby Thompson, Grace Leibowitz and Juniper Lepton — qualified as Massachusetts state champions for Future Problem Solving and were headed to the world finals at Indiana University. Coaches Deb Contrino and Christy Sally were traveling with the team.
Andrade also recognized students selected for the Advanced Studies and Leadership Program (ASLP), a partnership that includes Cape Cod Collaborative and Massachusetts Maritime Academy; the district said Barnstable represented the largest group of students from the Cape and Islands invited to the July program. Listed invitees included Juliet Amster, Alexander Angelov, Veil Balestri, Ty Eric Carlson Green, Kylie Case and others; the Enoch Cobb Fund awarded seven scholarships to support student participation.
Superintendent and other presenters highlighted multiple year‑end activities: senior awards night with more than $400,000 in local scholarships awarded to graduates, musical ensembles winning superior ratings at regional events, internship capstone showcases involving 29 senior interns and dozens of community partners, and numerous elementary and middle‑school community events (hat parades, historic units, cultural fairs and Memorial Day programs). The high school’s performing arts groups and athletics programs were also recognized for successful seasons and state‑tournament participation.
The committee and attendees praised the students, chaperones and community donors and asked several brief follow‑up questions. No formal action was taken; the items were presented for recognition and community information.
