Student tells Austin ISD trustees special education system failed him after district noncompliance findings

Ian McKenna, a student in Austin Independent School District, told trustees on May 13, 2021, that the district’s special education system failed to provide necessary services even after a state finding of noncompliance.
"The system failed me, and even after district found was found in noncompliance with the state, I was still not able to receive the help I needed or receive services to make up for what should have been provided to me," McKenna said during the public comment period. He described promises by district officials that were not fulfilled and said there is "no avenue for students to receive support in this district when those who are supposed to protect us and ensure services are filled so that we can be successful beyond high school."
McKenna named district leadership roles in his remarks, saying "district officials like the chief officer of school leadership, the chief academic officer of the assistant superintendent of student programs, have the power to do good and lead by positivity example." He called for more trust and effective follow-through to address special education deficiencies.
