The Barnstable School Committee approved a series of personnel actions and job‑description updates at its June 4 meeting, including the appointment of a school nurse, several revised job descriptions, creation of a new department‑head role in English language learners, and three administrative employment contracts.
The committee voted to appoint Sarah Butler as a school nurse at Barnstable High School to fill a vacancy created by retirements. The motion to approve the appointment was moved and seconded and the committee voted in favor; the motion carried unanimously.
The committee also approved several updated job descriptions and supplementary positions: an associate principal job description to add college and career technical education (CCTE) coordination duties, a revised maritime science instructor job description aligned with U.S. Coast Guard guidance, and an "alternative graduation coordinator" summer supplemental position to monitor students completing summer graduation requirements. The board approved the corresponding position request for the alternative graduation coordinator and approved the English language learners department‑head position (preK–7), which carries a stipend in addition to a teacher salary; motions for these items were made, seconded and carried unanimously.
The committee approved the fiscal year 2025 accounts payable warrant number 48 in the amount of $889,422.51. During that vote someone on the record said they would abstain because they had not had time to review the warrant; the abstention was not attributed to a named member in the open record. The motion otherwise passed.
In executive session the committee approved employment contracts announced in open session: a one‑year contract for Karina Da Silva as executive director of Multilingual Learners (starting July 1, 2025) at a base salary of $135,181; a three‑year contract for Sandy Gifford as director of transportation (starting July 1, 2025) at a base salary of $114,457.90; and a three‑year contract for David Badeau (director of food services) at the same base salary level. Each contract was moved, seconded and reported as approved "all in favor" when the meeting reconvened in open session.
No member recorded any dissent other than the unnamed abstention on the accounts‑payable warrant. Committee members discussed that several of the job‑description updates were budget‑neutral adjustments or reassignments of duties rather than new full‑time positions. For example, the CCTE associate principal change consolidates existing responsibilities into an updated, budget‑neutral job description to reflect a growing program of more than 400 students in formal pathways.
The actions concluded a slate of routine personnel and governance steps the district said are intended to support growing program needs and maintain continuity after retirements and departmental reorganizations.
