The Farmers Branch Senior Advisory Board said its May outing originally scheduled for the arboretum has been moved to Lone Star Park because, the board was told, flowers at the arboretum are no longer in bloom; the Lone Star Park trip is an evening outing and staff said nonalcoholic beverages are included. The board also asked for volunteers for the "Fish and Fun" event set for April 26.
Board members reviewed recent events and attendance: a breakfast earlier in the week drew 73 attendees, the board reported, and a recent bus trip to a casino was slightly overbooked when 44 people registered for a 40-seat bus. Members noted the bus will be used again in August.
For the July social, Jennifer, a member of the Senior Advisory Board, asked the group to choose a theme and food and said picnic-style finger foods — sandwiches, chicken salad, watermelon and strawberry shortcake — were favored in discussion. A planning subcommittee for the social was identified as Penny, Rick and Devin; board members agreed to meet and finalize details.
Members discussed entertainment and activities for the picnic, including a mobile axe-throwing vendor (board members raised safety concerns and noted the option of a trained instructor), ring toss and a pie-or-cookie contest. One board member suggested a single acoustic musician rather than a DJ; another described a clean comedy show the group had attended as a possible future offer.
No formal votes were taken on event programming. Staff asked interested volunteers to contact Jennifer and said more information about trips and sign-ups will be posted.
Board members also talked about logistics for the Lone Star Park trip, noting prior trips often filled quickly; one member said the park outing historically attracts full participation. The board reminded members that May will not have a formal board meeting but that the May 8 walkthrough (for the renovation) will occur; the second-quarter report will be presented at the June meeting.
