Finance committee approves bulk rock salt purchase at $70.79 per ton for winter season

The Aurora City Finance Committee on Sept. 25 approved a purchase of bulk rock salt at $70.79 per ton from Compass Minerals America (Overland Park) under the DuPage County joint purchasing agreement for the 2025–26 winter season.
Adrian Perez, superintendent of streets, told the committee the price represents a $3.11-per-ton savings from the prior year’s $73.90 rate. He said the city reduced its order quantity from 7,500 tons to 5,000 tons because of increased storage capacity from a new public works building, which will produce immediate cost savings.
Perez said the joint purchasing agreement helps diversify suppliers after supply disruptions in prior years, noting a salt mine collapse in the past that constrained availability. The committee approved the resolution by unanimous vote.
