Aurora Fire Department accepts $4,033.65 grant to replace grounding and bonding equipment

The Aurora City Finance Committee on Sept. 25 approved acceptance of a $4,033.65 grant for the Fire Department to purchase hazardous materials equipment.
Brandon Madsen, division chief with the Aurora Fire Department, told the committee the award from Transportation Community Awareness Emergency Response (TransCare) is a no-match grant and will fund a static ground and bond test system kit from Safeware Incorporated. He said the department’s current equipment was improvised and that the purchased kit will include a monitor to detect hazardous static buildup and materials compliant with National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) guidance.
Madsen said Captain John Ross, the hazmat team leader, identified the need and that the department responds regionally through the mutual aid system (MABAS 16). He described how proper grounding and bonding prevents static-discharge hazards during liquid transfer operations, such as when gasoline is moved between vehicles after a tanker rollover.
The committee voted unanimously to accept the grant. Alderman Edward J. Bugg asked staff to provide photos for the committee of the equipment before the committee of the whole review; Madsen said he would provide images.
