Prescott City Council on Tuesday approved City Contract No. 2026โ070 with Asphalt Paving & Supply Inc. to repair pavement and drainage problems on Pleasant Street between Carlton and Aubrey, awarding the work to the low bidder at $469,413.40.
Why it matters: The project addresses trench settlement, uneven pavement and related safety concerns resulting from prior utility work in a residential corridor. Staff said prompt repairs will reduce safety risks and avoid more costly future reconstruction.
Public Works capital program manager Tim Sherwood told council the work includes removal and replacement of utility trench backfill, damaged concrete, curb and gutter, asphalt pavement and utility adjustments. The city received three bids; the apparent low bidder was 8.5 percent above the engineer's estimate ($429,245.50). Staff verified licensing, bonding and prior municipal experience before recommending award.
Councilman Moore asked whether the city could pursue recourse against the original contractor; Sherwood said the trenching that later failed was performed in 2015 by a company called Capital Improvements, which is no longer in business, and the warranty period had expired years earlier.
Action: Council approved the contract on a 7โ0 vote. Work will be scheduled under the city standard construction services contract and overseen by Public Works staff.
Next steps: Staff will finalize contract paperwork and set a construction start date; the city will monitor trench repair backfill and pavement restoration under standard inspection procedures.
