Neighborhood Services in Prescott Valley plans a pilot household hazardous waste (HHW) collection this fall that will let participating households set out labeled HHW containers for curbside pickup, director Tracy Lira said.

"We're launching a brand new program. We're really excited about it. So it's our household hazardous waste program," Lira said. The town will accept items such as pesticides, pool chemicals, batteries and paint that should not go into regular trash.

The pilot requires online sign-up. Lira said sign-ups will be open "through the month of October." After the town compiles a list of participating addresses, a contracted company will schedule pickups in November. "Once you sign up, we'll send you an email with that date of your pickup. You just want to label it in a box labeled HHW Household hazardous waste," Lira said.

Lira said residents should prepare and label materials in a box; examples she gave include pesticides, pool chemicals, batteries and paint. The town intends the pilot to reduce improper disposal of hazardous materials and to test resident interest and operational logistics.

If the pilot succeeds, Neighborhood Services said it hopes to run HHW collection in future years. Residents seeking to participate should check the Town of Prescott Valley Neighborhood Services page for the October sign-up and for instructions about labeling and set-out.
