Ryan Atkinson, Butler County assistant county administrator and finance director, told commissioners that the county solicited bids for automated external defibrillators (AEDs) under the opioid plan the commission approved May 6, 2025. The county received 11 responses and recommends Nash Equipment Solutions LLC as the low bidder at $95,335.
Atkinson said the opioid fund balance recently received an unanticipated $17,000 settlement check and that the fund now holds roughly $300,000. The May 6 minutes cited an $80,000 allocation for AEDs; Atkinson said the proposed purchase exceeds that estimate because the county increased the number of units requested. He told the commission the selected AED model was chosen to match existing equipment used by the sheriff’s office to simplify field replacement.
Commissioner motion and vote: a commissioner moved to approve the purchase of 73 AEDs from Nash Equipment Solutions LLC for $95,335 and to authorize county staff to sign necessary documents. Commissioner Wazak moved the second; the vote passed 5–0.
Why it matters: The purchase replaces devices that the manufacturer no longer supports and that are reaching end of life; Atkinson said the previous generation of devices was rated for five years and that replacement parts and repairs are no longer widely available.
Ending: Atkinson said the devices will replace aged units in county buildings and on sheriff vehicles. The commission thanked staff and closed the item.
