The Merriam City Council unanimously approved a construction contract with Icon Structures Inc. on Sept. 22 for the second phase of City Hall interior improvements, including upgrades to the first-floor lobby, new carpet, signage, wayfinding and desk/counter modifications.
"These improvements include upgrades to the First Floor, the waiting area in the lobby, carpet throughout the lobby, signage and wayfinding, and desk and counter modification," Facility Superintendent Caleb Hunt told the council. He said the city received five bids, the low bid from Icon Structures was significantly under budget, and the company comes recommended by other local public clients.
Hunt said construction is expected to take about 75 days under the contract and will be phased to keep all three public counters open and accessible throughout the project. He clarified that the city will procure furniture separately to avoid contractor markup. Council member Shandridge moved to approve the contract; Mr. Reyes seconded. The roll call vote was unanimous, 8-0.
Why it matters: The contract authorizes interior work intended to improve customer service and staff workflow at City Hall; staff said phasing will reduce service disruption.
Next steps: Staff will issue a notice to proceed and meet with the architect and contractor to confirm construction phasing and material lead times; construction will begin after pre-construction coordination.
