Commission OKs northern DeMille Boulevard traffic island for last cupola installation

The Lapeer City Commission voted Monday to place the city's remaining decorative cupola on a traffic island on DeMille Boulevard, identifying the most northern island just south of Genesee Street as the preferred location.
City Manager Mike Womack explained the commission had considered several placement options, including Chatfield School property, and said the northern DeMille Boulevard island would provide visibility and foot traffic benefits. "I think it would have a high track account seeing it," Womack said while describing candidate locations.
Commissioner Glisman moved to accept Option 2A and to describe the site specifically as "the most northern traffic island on DeMille Road just south of Genesee Street." Commissioner Brady supported the motion. The motion carried by voice vote. Commissioners asked staff to return a cost estimate for installation of a base; Womack said $10,000 had been budgeted for the base and staff would bring a formal quote back for approval.
The approval was for placement only; no construction contract or spending authorization was made at the meeting. Staff said they will seek a formal construction quote and return to the commission for final purchasing or bidding approval.
What happens next: staff will prepare a cost estimate for base installation and return the quote to the commission for formal approval before any funds are spent.
