The Garden City City Commission unanimously approved a proclamation on Sept. 2 declaring September 2025 as Hunger Action Month and asked residents to support the Kansas Food Bank's work in Western Kansas.
Lisa Knoll, representing the Kansas Food Bank, told the commission regional food insecurity remains a serious problem: "1 in 8 individuals in Western Kansas, in the 31 most Western Kansas counties, 1 in 8 are food insecure and 1 in 6 children," she said, urging the commission to proclaim the month to raise awareness and encourage volunteerism and support.
Mayor Roy Cessna signed the proclamation during the meeting. The proclamation text cited that hunger affects "over 5,300 individuals and families within our community," that "1 in 7 Kansans and 1 in 6 Kansas children in Finney County" are food insecure, and that Feeding America has designated September as Hunger Action Month. The proclamation encourages citizens to support the Kansas Food Bank and its partners.
Commissioners moved and seconded the item; the mayor called the vote and announced the item passed. Afterward, officials invited representatives for a photograph with the mayor.
The action is ceremonial: the proclamation raises community awareness and does not create a binding policy or budgetary commitment. The commission did not attach a funding allocation to the proclamation at the meeting.
