Berkley zoning board adopts revised rules of procedure, removes sign chapter reference

The Berkley Zoning Board of Appeals on Aug. 11 approved revisions to its rules of procedure to align the document with the city’s recent zoning ordinance rewrite.
Community development staff briefed the board on three changes: removing a reference to chapter 94 (signs) after the zoning rewrite, updating the code references to chapter 2 section 40 for ethics and chapter 138 for zoning, and replacing the phrase “community development director” with “community development zoning administrator” for certain administrative authorities. Staff also revised the language about excused absences so the board “acknowledges” absences rather than approving them.
“I overlooked that with the new zoning ordinance change that occurred that, under section 21(b), we had, chapter 94 signs that was in there. So I had to eliminate that,” Miss Anderson told the board while summarizing the edits. She also noted the duty wording change and the administrative-title update.
A commissioner moved to approve the revised rules as presented; the board voted in favor by roll call with no recorded objections.
The revisions are ministerial edits adopted to maintain consistency with the recently rewritten zoning ordinance; staff will continue to administer board processes. The board was provided copies of the updated rules and a newly adopted board-and-commissions handbook as part of the meeting packet.
