Kosciusko County commissioners approved a contract with Quality Correctional Care (QCC) to provide medical services to the county jail effective Jan. 1, moving coverage from 16 hours per day to continuous 24/7 coverage. County presenters said the annual contract amount is $563,418.86, payable in monthly installments of $56,951.57, and that the line item was included in the recently approved county budget.
Sheriff’s Office representatives and county staff said the expanded contract is a flat annual fee for full-year service and is not based on jail population. Commissioners and staff discussed liability and medical decision-making inside the jail; presenters said having a contracted medical provider on staff reduces the risk of inexperienced custody staff needing to make medical judgments.
A motion to approve the QCC contract was moved, seconded and approved by voice vote. Commissioners noted the increase in monthly claims observed in current-month bills and that the new contract represents roughly a one-third increase from previously budgeted monthly costs. Staff confirmed the contract cost is already reflected in the approved budget.
County staff will finalize contract execution and coordinate the transition to 24/7 medical coverage with jail administration and the contracted provider.
