Columbia Borough’s application for a Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) of $200,000 to renovate the 300 block of Union Street was awarded and ranked first among six applications, the borough engineer reported at the Aug. 12 meeting.
Engineer Ronaldo told council the borough will proceed with design work and plans to advertise bids in spring with a targeted construction start in late spring next year. Ronaldo said the borough’s application scored highest of six applicants and called the outcome “a home run project.”
Why it matters: the CDBG funds will support street improvements in a neighborhood block, with design and construction expected to span the 2025‑26 planning year. Council authorized staff to begin design and procurement work.
Ronaldo also provided updates on other public‑works projects: Walnut Street efforts were expected to be completed before the school year; work began on the 800 block of Chestnut Street; clearing at McGinnis was underway; and Maple Park construction procurement was expected to begin soon.
