Oconee County Schools details E-SPLOST projects, bus replacements, radio and bus-camera upgrades and storm-pipe repairs

Operations and facilities staff presented a package of capital recommendations and project updates at the Oct. 6 work session, saying most would be presented as superintendent recommendations at the Oct. 20 regular meeting and funded using a mix of E-SPLOST and general-fund dollars.
Key recommended procurements and projects listed for Oct. 20 consideration included:
- Replacement of six school buses (three 77-passenger and three special-education buses) with a proposed purchase from Rush Truck Centers for $937,800.
- Replacement of an aging analog radio system for transportation with a new digital system from Alpha Communications for $61,290; presenters said the new system would include base stations for each school, an antenna on the existing radio tower and integration with compatible radios in the fleet to avoid reliance on cell service.
- A cellular bus-camera system procurement from Rush Truck Centers for $191,188.60 that would consolidate three camera brands and enable cellular uploads; presenters said the cellular system will store video on the onboard hard drive if a bus passes through a cellular dead zone and will upload when service is available.
- Repair of a set of visitor bleachers in North Oconee High School’s main gym with a proposal from H. E. Hodge for $43,800; presenters warned parts could take up to 14 weeks and downtime about one week, and said the repair would be coordinated around school and athletic schedules.
- A recommended contract for storm-pipe replacement at North Oconee: replacing approximately 520 linear feet of deteriorated pipe discovered during inspections; Smith and Company was the recommended contractor for about $111,273, with Breedlove Land Printing recommended for a related $3,500 item. Facilities staff said crews had already replaced 300 linear feet earlier in the sinkhole-related repair and that the newly identified 520 feet would also need replacement.
Operations staff also reported transportation usage numbers for the previous month (1,431 buses deployed for a total of 11,431 miles across athletic, special-education and other trips; note: counts were read during the meeting) and that district-wide generator installations are complete with a remote monitoring system being added.
All capital and equipment recommendations were listed as superintendent recommendations for the Oct. 20 board meeting; no formal board votes on these procurements took place at the Oct. 6 work session.
