Commission approves fire-suppression bids, directs rebid of over-budget fire alarm work at Fire Station 2

The Garden City Commission on Aug. 5 approved selected bids to install a fire leg and fire-suppression system at Fire Station 2 and rejected the single bid for the fire and smoke alarm system as over budget, directing staff to rebid the alarm portion.

Fire Department staff reported two bids for the suppression work and one bid for the alarm system. A bidder identified in materials as Tetra Plumbing and Fire (presenter read name) submitted a combined proposal for the fire leg and suppression system totaling $95,642; another bidder (redacted in transcript as "**** Construction") bid $123,624 for the suppression work and also bid $77,482 for the fire and smoke alarm system. Staff recommended accepting the lower suppression bid and rejecting the alarm bid to solicit more competitive proposals for the alarm system.

“The project is located at Fire Station 2 located at 1605 East Marion,” the fire chief said during the presentation, and staff noted the project budget allocated $159,000 in the capital improvement plan for the combined work. With the recommended award of the suppression work, staff said $62,358 remained available to cover the fire alarm system; because the current alarm bid exceeded budget, staff recommended rebidding that portion to get better pricing.

The commission approved a motion awarding work to Tetra Plumbing for $31,617 for the fire leg and to the sprinkler-system bidder for $64,025 for the suppression system, rejected the alarm-system bid and directed staff to rebid that scope. Staff said the project costs will be coded to account 40177100-6516 and that the suppression work can proceed while staff seeks additional bids for the alarm system.
