Council committee to consider awarding Avondale Way sidewalk repairs contract after bid under estimate

Public works staff asked the Committee of the Whole on Sept. 2 to place on the Sept. 16 consent agenda an award of the Avondale Way sidewalk repairs construction contract to Fury Site Works Incorporated of North Bend for just over $965,000.

Steve Gibbs, capital projects manager, said the project will remove significant Americans with Disabilities Act barriers along Avondale Way adjacent to Bear Creek Shopping Center. The total repaired sidewalk length is about 1,600 feet (roughly 1,000 feet on the south side and 600 feet on the north side). As part of the design, staff evaluated 57 trees and recommended removal of seven trees because of root damage and trunks outgrowing the planter strips; protections will be placed around trees that remain.

Gibbs said the city received 10 bids and that the low bid came in under the engineer’s estimate. Council member Nueva Camino asked why the city would use an outside contractor rather than the newly formed in‑house concrete crew; staff said the concrete crew completed other segments (166 and Cleveland Street) and that the Avondale project originally included three segments before the in‑house crew was available.

The committee recorded no objections to moving the contract award to the Sept. 16 consent agenda.
