Council approves police promotions and two planning/zoning board appointments

The Somerville City Council on Oct. 9 approved, by roll call, a committee report confirming eight internal promotions within the police department and two appointments to land-use boards.
The Committee on Confirmation and Appointments recommended approval of Olivia Mobayad to the Zoning Board of Appeals and Coralie Cooper to the Planning Board. The committee also reviewed and recommended eight promotional appointments in the police department: Michael Peron to police captain; Rico Isidoro and Mark Defava to police lieutenant; Joseph Tevis, Justin Costa, Patrick Canty and Cassandra Camper to police sergeant; and Richard Lavey Jr. to police deputy chief.
Councilor Ewan Kampen, the committee chair, spoke in support of the nominees and praised their qualifications. The committee report was accepted by roll call; with 10 councilors voting in favor the report was approved and the appointments will proceed to oath-taking and swearing-in processes as appropriate.
The council placed the committee report on the agenda for approval and then conducted the roll-call vote that passed the report. Several promoted officers and appointees were invited forward for a recognition ceremony during the meeting.
No details on individual employment agreements or effective dates were discussed in open session; the council recorded the committee’s unanimous recommendation and approved the report.
