Councilmember Mike Harding read a proclamation recognizing National Lead Poisoning Prevention Week and the city’s Healthy Homes partnerships; the Housing and Community Development Department accepted the proclamation and outlined ongoing work to address lead hazards.
Department staff said South St. Petersburg is within the 95th–100th percentile for lead-paint pollution and described the city’s efforts with the Healthy Homes Coalition, the Department of Health and community partners to educate residents, perform early detection and offer lead-paint remediation grants. A public “Get the Lead Out” kick‑off event will be held Oct. 25 at Childs Park Recreation Center with family activities and information about remediation grants, staff said.
Harding emphasized the long-term nature of removing lead hazards in housing built in the 1940s–1960s and credited local champions and interagency coordination for progress. No funding decisions were taken during the proclamation presentation, though staff said lead remediation grants are available and that the city continues interagency outreach.
