Board approves five-year school-based mental health plan; committee advances multiple policy updates

The Educational Programs & Policy Committee met in late August and presented policy updates and a five-year school-based mental health plan to the full board on Sept. 8.
Committee chair Ron Uphreys reported that the committee reviewed a set of policy updates tied to recent legislation; the policies reviewed include parental inspection of instructional material, school trips, out-of-district admission, emergency epinephrine devices, administering medication to students, public records retention, personnel files, and recruitment and selection of personnel. The committee supported those updates and forwarded them to the full board for first reading.
Dr. Brian Huddle provided an instructional update and Dr. Chris Bennett presented updated academic data from 2024–25 during the committee meeting. Sandy Hamrick presented the new five-year school-based mental health plan, which the committee unanimously supported and recommended to the full board for approval. At the full board meeting on Sept. 8 the board voted 7–0 to approve the mental health plan.
The committee also discussed tuition and other options related to the district’s virtual school; staff said research and options remain under consideration. A Reading Horizons presenter will brief the committee at James Love Elementary on Sept. 30, the committee noted.
