Council proclaims October 2025 Domestic Violence Awareness Month; YWCA Monterey County to open shelter

The Carmel‑by‑the‑Sea City Council on Tuesday read and adopted a proclamation recognizing October 2025 as Domestic Violence Awareness Month and invited Jessica Mesias, chief executive officer of YWCA Monterey County, to accept the proclamation and speak about local services.
Mesias described the agency’s survivor‑centered services, including 24/7 crisis hotlines, confidential shelter, legal advocacy and youth prevention programming. She told the council the YWCA serves primarily women and children but offers services to anyone in need. Mesias also announced that the YWCA plans to open a third safe house shelter in the coming month.
The council read the proclamation in the meeting and members encouraged residents to share hotline numbers, support survivors and volunteer with the YWCA.
