Councilmembers on Tuesday recognized Central Coast VNA & Hospice during the meeting’s volunteer spotlight and heard a presentation about the agency’s services, capacity and financial needs.
Carolyn Schanzer, senior director of engagement at Central Coast VNA & Hospice, told the council the nonprofit provides home health, palliative and hospice care across Monterey, San Benito, Santa Cruz and south Santa Clara counties. Schanzer said the agency served more than 3,900 patients in 2024, made 73,000 home‑health and hospice visits and supports bereavement services for community members.
Schanzer said Central Coast VNA & Hospice covers costs for patients who cannot pay, does not turn patients away, and maintains volunteer and bereavement programs that are funded largely by philanthropy. She explained the nonprofit is facing rising Medicare pressures and urged residents to support the agency during the Monterey County Gives campaign (Nov. 13–Dec. 31).
Mayor Byrne and councilmembers thanked the agency for its service and encouraged outreach; the council also invited the group to return for continued community partnership.
